York County residents can be proud -- and perhaps sleep a little easier -- knowing their sheriff has been named Sheriff of the Year by the South Carolina Sheriff's Association.

The group lauded Sheriff Bruce Bryant for pursuing new strategies on illegal immigration, equipping deputies with a new 800 MHz radio system and creating the Alive @25 program that teaches young people safe driving habits.

Bryant, in 2006, was only the second York County sheriff to be elected president of the Sheriff's Association. The association was founded in 1913, and today consists of the state's 46 sheriffs. The last York County sheriff to hold that post was Grover Noe in 1961.

Bryant, a Republican facing no opposition in the November election, has been sheriff since unseating Democrat Joe Mitchell in the 1996 campaign. He gives credit to his organization for this honor. But his leadership skills and innovative approach to his job also played a role in an award that comes from his peers.

Congratulations to him on this well-deserved honor.
