The bad news is that the cost of a gallon of gasoline is around $4. The good news is that more people might resort to riding bicycles.
Biking -- with the proper safety equipment, of course -- is a good way to get around. It's relatively cheap and it's good for both the environment and one's health.
Some indicators point to an increase in bike riding in York County. At least two local bike shops are doing a booming business both in repairing bikes and selling new bikes and equipment.
Some local residents are taking up bicycling for the first time. Others are dusting off their old bikes as an alternative to driving their cars.
York County is not entirely bike friendly yet. But that might be slowly changing.
In the 2003 "Pennies for Progress" road-improvement program, voters approved 34 miles of bike lanes in the county. That includes lanes on Mount Gallant Road, Ebinport Road and Eden Terrace between Winthrop Coliseum and Anderson Road in Rock Hill. A series of rural two-lane roads in Western York County know as Nemitz Loop also will feature bike lanes.
A new U.S. 21 bridge over the Catawba River also is likely to include bike and walking lanes. And a network of trails suitable for biking soon will connect Rock Hill's downtown area to Manchester Village and other landmarks near the Catawba River.
Local bicycle enthusiasts, including the 500-member Rock Hill Bicycle Club, are clamoring for bike paths in the city. They hope one day Rock Hill will earn official recognition as a bike-friendly city.
We hope they keep pushing.
