York County has some tough high school football teams this year. And, yes, that's an understatement.
Of the seven schools in the county, five are in the playoffs. Local Class AAAA action starts today when Rock Hill High hosts Fort Dorchester. On Friday, Clover hosts Mauldin; Northwestern hosts York; and South Pointe hosts West Florence.
Whew! That's a lot of football.
And chances are good that one or more local teams will be in the hunt to the end. Rock Hill's three powerhouses look especially strong.
As Herald prep football whiz Barry Byers notes, the three teams are a combined 30-3. Rock Hill, 9-2, lost to Northwestern and South Pointe. Northwestern lost to South Pointe. Impressive.
For now, in a nod to diplomacy, we wish all York County teams well in the playoffs -- although York and Northwestern play each other Friday, and other local teams are likely to face off in the weeks ahead.
Whatever the results, these teams can take pride in a great season. We hope to be cheering when the last of them is left standing, holding a state title.
