VOICE OF THE PEOPLE | July 24

Good Samaritans stopped to help

There are so many nice people in Rock Hill. On the evening of July 13, I was at the intersection of Dave Lyle Boulevard and John Ross Parkway when my car would not start. It was rush hour and I was on my way to meet my daughter at Chick-fil-A. Not knowing what to do because I had left my cell phone at home, I got out of the car and looked around. Alovely young lady, Iris, stopped to ask if I needed to use her cell phone. I was so relieved, but I didn't remember my daughter's cell number. Iris volunteered to go to Chick-fil-A and let my daughter know I was in trouble. Wait, there's more. Many more people offered the use of their phones.

One car came back. It was Dale, with a car full of children and adults. He said, “I've come to get you out of this traffic.” By then, my daughter was there and the two of them pushed my car into the back parking lot of Bob Evan's Restaurant where I waited for AAA to come tow it.

I didn't get the last names of these two wonderful people, but I want to thank them so much for helping a stranger. Thank you, Iris and Dale.

Who would choose socialism over capitalism?

I had planned to respond to Wayne Clark's absurd article slamming capitalism by explaining once again that capitalism is the only economic system that permits voluntary participation and is responsible for all economic progress and prosperity of our country. Our nation's downhill slide to socialism started with the passing of the graduated income tax law, based on Karl Marx's, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.”

Then came the Federal Reserve, followed with by New Deal liberalism (Socialism) of the 1930s, and now this Marxist Obama comes along and admits to everyone that he wants to re-distribute the wealth. Hello, class warfare.

All of the ills Mr. Clark mentions can be traced to government involvement in the marketplace.

A national conference of extreme Muslims made the death of capitalism their main subject and purpose, and lets everyone understand why Clark is so misguided and seriously confused in his thinking, or rather non-thinking. It's hard to believe that a man so gifted in so many areas seems to have lost his reasoning. How can a thinking person choose socialism over free enterprise?

Has anyone noticed that Obama and his 20-odd czars have stopped answering questions at news meetings? Like Clark, they don't have answers. They don't understand that nobody gets any when there ain't none.

Socialism works for you as long as your neighbor has money.

U.S. citizens deserve good health care

I am more than disappointed to hear cable news sound bites in which Sen. Jim DeMint so obviously is playing “gotcha” with the president. I would like to hear his plan to maximize government costs in a way to cover the uninsured. Many other countries paying fewer dollars per person rank above our country in infant mortality and longevity. Millions of dollars were spent by private insurance companies to discredit Michael Moore's film “Sicko” because they could not afford for the viewing public to see and believe. Our congressmen have health care that they deserve, but do all of our citizens not deserve health care?
