The final American Legion Baseball standings for League V were decided Saturday afternoon, but not without one final battle.
Going into a scheduled doubleheader, Fort Mill Post 43 needed to win at least once to finish second, and if Clover won twice, second place would go to Rock Hill Post 34.
Rock Hill split a pair of games this week and was sitting in wait at 8-8. Fort Mill went into Saturday's doubleheader at 8-6, but the second game wasn't played because Post 43 won the opener 4-2 and moved to 9-6.
Chester Post 27 won the league with a 13-2 record, Fort Mill was second at 9-6 and Rock Hill third at 8-8. They will represent League V in the Upper State playoffs starting Monday against the top three teams from League VI.
Never miss a local story.
By finishing first, Chester gets home field advantage and will host Inman on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, if necessary, in their best-of-five series. Tuesday's game, and Thursday's, if needed, will be played at Inman at Inman Mills Field.
Fort Mill won a coin flip with its opponent, Gaffney, and also gets the Monday, Wednesday and rubber game on Friday, if needed, at home. Gaffney gets the Tuesday and Thursday home games.
Gaffney plays on Commissioner Field at the Cherokee Recreation Complex, which is back to the left across I-85 at exit 90. Turn right at the youth baseball fields, then left past the fields and turn left.
Rock Hill goes to Spartanburg on Monday, Wednesday and possibly on Friday, and hosts on Tuesday and Thursday, if necessary.
Spartanburg's home games will be played at Dorman High School.
According to Buck Schwing, Post 34's athletics director, the games are scheduled for 7 p.m. each night.
