In a physical game that saw all five Spring Valley starters foul out, the South Pointe Stallions were able to prevail thanks to their free throw shooting and good half court defense down the stretch. Tre Erby led all scorers with 28 to help the Stallions defeat the Vikings 89-75 Wednesday night.
South Pointe jumped out to a 10-0 lead as Erby had 8 first quarter points. Spring Valley could get nothing to fall in the first 6 minutes and they also had 6 turnovers in the first. South Pointe led 17-10 after one.
The pace really started to pick up in the second quarter, which enabled the Vikings to get back into the game. Their press helped them cut into the Stallions lead, but the scoring of Charles Holmes and Erby helped South Pointe lead 37-34 at the half.
Things were tight all throughout the third quarter. Ryan Zimmerman, who had 24 for Spring Valley, found a hot hand and helped the Vikings surge ahead by as much as 3. Erby continued to shine as well and his scoring helped the Stallions hold 57-56 lead after the third.
Never miss a local story.
The fourth quarter saw South Pointe put the game away thanks to their free throw shooting. Spring Valley stayed close, but at the end with all of their starters fouling out they were unable to muster enough offense. South Pointe was able to overcome Erby fouling out, thanks to Manzey Miller who had 13, and Diami Moore had 11.
Jameel Jones had 12 for Spring Valley. Ryan Jenkins and Trey Duncan added 10.
"We have to find a way to score at the end of the game. Tre Erby is a great player who can shoot and drive. Ronald Zimmerman did not have his best game, but he was able to step up and keep us in it," Spring Valley coach Perry Dozier said.
"We came out and played well," South Pointe coach Dwayne Hartsoe said. "Spring Valley was able to get it going at the tempo they wanted in the second quarter. Zimmerman, Jones and Jenkins were as good as advertised. We played good defense down the stretch."
