DAVIDSON, N.C. In a match of limited opportunities, the Davidson Wildcats took advantage of the ones they were given, downing the Winthrop women’s soccer team 2-0 Thursday evening.
Winthrop falls to 3-3-1 on the season, snapping a two-match winning streak, Davidson improves to 2-6, snapping a six-match losing skid.
Davidson grabbed its first tally in the 37th minute. After only two shots, with none on goal in the opening 36 minutes, Sabine Chandler sent a hopeful ball toward the goal from 30 yards out. The shot beat Winthrop goalie Kelly Horan over an outstretched hand, sneaking just under the ball on the left hand post.
The Wildcats got their second goal on another long shot. This time, Miranda Geffrey sent a ball from just in front of the Davidson bench that again beat Horan on the high side and found the back corner of the net.
Winthrop fired off a total of nine shots with four of them going on frame. One of Winthrop’s best chances came in the 80th minute as Brianna Palmer received a ball behind the defense and went one-on-one with Davidson goalie Becca Ravitz who came sliding out of the goal to take the ball off of Palmer’s foot.
The Eagles were scheduled to host USC Beaufort on Sunday but due to the effects that Hurricane Irma had on South Carolina’s Lowcountry, the USC Beaufort has yet to be reopened to students so the match has been cancelled. Winthrop will now be off until Sept. 23 when the Eagles open Big South Conference play with a road match at Radford.
