The Winthrop women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to VMI Wednesday at Eagle Field.
The loss downed Winthrop to 4-6-4 (3-2 Big South), while VMI moved to 5-10-2 (1-2.)
"We just didn't show up to play with intensity," Winthrop coach Melissa Heinz said. "We came out overlooking them and expecting an easy win. VMI came out to play hard and got it done."
Junior forward Chelsea White scored her sixth goal of the year, while senior midfielder Michelle Butler provided her second assist.
Junior midfielder Kristen Lee missed three scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes. Sophomore midfielder Katie Schraudenbach missed another chance and the teams went to the locker room with a scoreless tie.
VMI got the first goal of the game when Chrissy Beach received the ball with her back to the goal and cleared a defender to beat junior goalkeeper Dimitra Poulos in the 65th minute.
Five minutes later, the Lady Keydets stretched their lead to 2-0 when Erin Squires found the upper left on a shot from outside the box.
Winthrop had a couple of chances on a 20-yard free kick by Butler and from a shot by White that touched the crossbar. The Lady Eagles finally got one goal in the 84th minute when Butler found White on the run and she ripped a shot to the keeper's right side.
The Lady Eagles step out of conference for one game when they host Wisconsin-Green Bay at noon Sunday.
