The final day of action at the 2008 Winthrop/Asics Invitational saw more Irwin Belk Track and Winthrop records broken, as eight total records fell on Saturday.
In the women's competition, there were three records broken in the 200m dash, 3000m steeplechase, and triple jumps events. In the 200m dash, Dionre Gibson of Charleston Southern ran a 23.80 to break the old record held previously by Natalie Dixon of South Carolina State. In the 3000m steeplechase, Aubrey Bergquist of Coastal Carolina broke her own track record of 11:38.51 as she ran a 11:31.34. Marie-Josee Le Jour broke the old track record in the discus throw with a throw of 50.45m, previously held by Tiffany Evans of Radford who threw a 45.22m.
In the men's portion of the invitational, five records total were broken in the 400m dash, 4x100 relay, javelin throw, discus throw and the high jump. In the 400m dash, Michael Rhue of Charleston Southern broke his previous track record of 47.05 by running a 46.82. In the 4x100 relay, Charleston Southern also broke their old track record of 40.90 by running a 40.83. Jerel Langley of Gardner-Webb broke his old track record of 55.55m in the javelin throw, with a throw of 58.16m. In the high jump, Jacques Watson of Coastal Carolina broke the previous record of 2.10m held by Winthrop's Jason Williams by jumping 2.15m. In the discus throw, Ryan Gordon of Christopher Newport had a throw of 46.79 that broke the old track record held of 46.53m previously held by Timothy Morse of Radford.
In the running events, senior Matt Elliott led the Eagles as he placed first in the 800m run invitational by running a 1:52.02. Freshman Casey Lyons finished third in the 1500m run invitational as he ran a 3:57.19. Freshman Tyler Hudgins, running in the 3000m steeplechase, placed third as he ran a 10:15.48. In the men's 4x400m relay, Winthrop placed third overall as they ran a combined time of 3:30.13.

In the field events, freshman Keary Simms led Winthrop as he finished first in the triple jump by jumping 14.26m. Junior Ashley Howard placed second in the discus throw with a throw of 48.37m. Williams, participating in the high jump, placed second with a jump of 2.05m. Freshman Jared Baird placed second in the javelin throw with a throw of 57.01m.
The Winthrop men's and women's track teams will be back in action during the weekend of April 17-19 as they host the 2008 Big South Conference Championships at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Complex.
