HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Winthrop's men's golf team finished 10th out of 14 teams at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in with a three-round score of 898.
The University of New Orleans won the tournament with a 16-over 868.
Winthrop senior Kelly Manders scored a top-20 finish, tying for ninth with a 6-over 219 with rounds of 76, 72 and 71. He was seven strokes behind the medalist, New Orleans' Ken Looper.
The Eagles' Kyle Bearden posted a first-round 68 to lead the tournament. He shot a 75 in the second round but slowed to a third-round 82. He finish tied for 33rd with a 225. Other Winthrop scores were Brandon Truesdale with 228, Brent Martin with 237 and Cipriano Ayala with 242.
• WOMEN'S GOLF -- Winthrop's women's golf team finished 14th out of 19 schools at the 2008 Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament that was completed Tuesday afternoon at the Oak Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island.
The tournament closes out the fall season for coach Jodi Wendt's squad. The Lady Eagles will open the spring season on Feb. 22 when they return to the same location for the Kiawah Island Women's Intercollegiate.
Winthrop finished with a total score of 968 (314-327-327) to finish 61 shots behind tournament-champion Georgia State's 907. The Eagles were led by freshman Brittany Penny's 238 score (78-79-81) as she tied for 45th in individual competition. Next in line for Winthrop was Fort Mill senior Sara Hester, who finished in a tie for 47th position with a 239 (82-80-77).
Junior Rachel Smith shot a 245 (79-80-86) and tied for 60th place while freshmen Kayla Cline and Katie Bolling finished 68th and 83rd, respectively. Cline shot 248 (77-88-83) while Bolling had a 258 (80-89-89).
