HOUSTON -- The Winthrop men's golf team is in 11th place after the first two rounds of the 15-team Rice Intercollegiate being held at the Westwood Golf Club.
The Eagles shot rounds of 302 and 305 for a combined score of 607 after 36 holes of their 2009 season opener. The final 18 holes will be played today.
Winthrop is 32 shots behind tourney leader Houston which shot 575. Pacific and Liberty are tied at second with 586.
Winthrop senior Brent Martin (LaPlata, Md.) shot 148 (72-76) and tied for 21st overall. Freshman Kyle Bearden (Winnsboro) is tied for 31st at 151 (75-76) while Cipriano Ayala (North Myrtle Beach) is tied for 46th place at 153 (76-77). Senior Trevor Muffley (Longs) shot 155 (79-76) to tie for 45th. Rounding out the Winthrop scoring was senior Kelly Manders who struggled to a 160 (81-79) and is tied for 72nd.

Winthrop will play the second round today. The men's next tournament is scheduled for March 8-10 when they will participate in the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken.
