Winthrop attacker Shannon Gallagher (Silver Spring, Md.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while High Point midfielder Jasmine Jordan (Baltimore, Md.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the final week of the regular-season, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, Presbyterian College defender Maura Talvacchia (Moorestown, N.J.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Gallagher had a stellar week as she totaled 22 points on 12 goals and 10 assists in three wins -- helping the Eagles jump into fourth in the Conference standings. She started the week with five points against Coastal Carolina on three goals and two assists. She followed that with eight points on five goals and three assists at Liberty, and closed the week with nine points against Presbyterian on six goals and three assists. She also picked up 10 ground balls, nine draw controls and two caused turnovers.
The team also earned six All-Conference honors Monday as the Big South office announced its annual award winners. Junior Jenna Kasmarik and sophomore Shannon Gallagher were both voted to the Big South All-Conference First Team. Junior Alyssa Blevins, sophomore Hayley Krause and freshman Paige Jenkins were each named to the All-Conference Second Team while sophomore Logan McCarthy was named to the All-Academic Team.
Fans invited to join tennis teams for Selection Show
The Winthrop men’s and women’s tennis teams will learn where they will play and who their opponents will be in the first and second rounds of the 2014 NCAA Tennis Tournament at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29. Eagle fans are invited to view the NCAA.com Selection Show and celebrate with the Big South Conference Champions in the Coca-Cola Academic Resource Center on the lower level of the Winthrop Coliseum. The Winthrop men’s team will be making its first NCAA appearance in 2010, the last time that both the men’s and women’s squads, earned automatic bids in the same year. The women’s squad is making its seventh straight trip to the tournament.
