The Winthrop women’s cross country team finished sixth place out of 10 schools while the men were seventh out nine teams at the Big South Conference Preview Meet held Saturday at Gardner-Webb.
High Point claimed first place in both the women’s 5 kilometer and the men’s 8 kilometer events. Coastal Carolina’s Letitia Saayman won the women’s race in 18:08.43. Amon Teror of Campbell won the race by nine seconds with a time of 25:35.37.
The Winthrop women were led by freshman Hannah Lopez, who finished 24th with a time of 20:27.73, nosing out freshman teammate Victoria Burdette, a Rock Hill native, by a mere 20 one-hundredths of a second.
The top individual for the men was freshman Sam DiBridge, who was clocked in 28:36.83. Four of Winthrop’s top five men’s finishers were freshmen.
Men’s soccer: Charlotte 3, Winthrop 0: The Eagles fell in their home opener. The loss drops Winthrop to 3-2, while the 49ers improved to 3-1.
Winthrop will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts USC Upstate at 6 p.m.
Volleyball: Rachel Lenz tallied 32 kills over two matches during the second day of the Active Ankle Challenge in Auburn, Ala. The Eagles topped Troy 3-1 after falling 3-2 to Auburn.
Winthrop moved its record to 5-6 and will host Davidson on Tuesday.
