The Big South Conference baseball tournament was rained out Wednesday, the second straight day that the league’s championship event was called off by torrential rain in the Lexington area.
With an entire day to kill, Winthrop players raided their hotel’s board game stash.
“You go downstairs and they were playing Scrabble, some of them were playing chess, they were playing Connect Four,” said Winthrop coach Tom Riginos. “Every game that the Hampton Inn had.”
Winthrop, the tournament’s top seed, was supposed to play Campbell at 4:30 on Tuesday, but the entire day was rained out. The eight schools’ coaches met early Wednesday morning to check out the Lexington Memorial Stadium playing surface. Riginos and the other coaches agreed that field conditions were unsafe for outfielders.

If the wet weather moves out of the area by Wednesday night, the tournament should be completed on schedule - crammed together as it may be. If the Big South can’t play baseball on Thursday, the tournament format will most likely have to be altered with games needing to be finished by Sunday at the latest because of the NCAA selection show.
“If we get more rain we’re really gonna have to open our eyes and get our heads together,” said Riginos.
Winthrop spent time on Tuesday and Wednesday lifting weights and hitting in the indoor cages at River Bluff High School. When Riginos talked to a reporter around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, he mentioned it was “raining sideways,” and there were tornadoes reported in the Midlands at various times throughout the day.
“Today got a little long,” Riginos said. “We didn’t know what we were doing. We had to kind of wait and see what this weather was going to do.”
The Winthrop contingent planned to visit a local mall Wednesday night, mainly just to get out of the hotel. You can only Go Fish so many times.
