COLUMBIA -- It was hard to stop South Pointe quarterback Stephon Gilmore or Byrnes tailback Marcus Lattimore this season. So it's little surprise their state championship years landed both on South Carolina's AP all-state high school football team for 2008.
Gilmore, a senior, was the state's top player, winning the "Mr. Football" award after throwing 37 touchdowns and leading South Pointe to a 15-0 record and its first Class 4A Division II title.
Lattimore, a junior, was arguably the state's top running back as he helped Byrnes to its sixth state championship in seven seasons. He ran for more than 2,300 yards and 30 touchdowns this season, including 305 yards and four touchdowns in the Class AAAA Division I title game. The team finished 14-1.
Team members were announced Monday, selected from nominations by members of The Associated Press.
South Pointe defensive back DeVonte Holloman and linebacker Harold White made the team, along with Byrnes defensive lineman Brandon Willis and defensive back Justin Bright.
Northwestern, which fell to city rival South Pointe in the state finals, had two of its offensive stars on the team in Cordarelle Patterson and Jarrett Neely.
Timberland also had three all-state members in running back Rockarius King, offensive lineman Quinton Washington and defensive lineman Aldrick Fordham.
Myrtle Beach, which won the Class 3A state title earlier this month, had two players selected in receiver Jamere Valentine and defensive lineman Matt Smith.
Dorman's tight end Brandon Thomas and defensive back Walt Canty, who was a South Carolina most valuable player in last Saturday's Shrine Bowl, also made the team.
Joining Washington and Thomas on the offensive line are J.K. Jay of Christ Church, Tyler Felt of J.L. Mann, Tymeco Gregory of Greer and Denzelle Good of Gaffney. All of them played in the Shrine Bowl except for Gregory, who played in the North-South All-Star game a week earlier.
The all-state team also includes Summerville kicker Dylan Zimmerman, who was 15 of 23 on field goals with a long of 49 yards this season.
West Florence's Malliciah Goodman is the team's other defensive lineman. He had 15 sacks this season and played in the Shrine Bowl, which pits the top seniors in the Palmetto State against those from North Carolina.
Linebackers Quandon Christian of Lake View and Sam Montgomery of Greenwood were also named to the team. The final defensive back was Daniel standout DeAndre Hopkins, who had nine interceptions this season.
Grant Clayton of A.C. Flora, a Shrine Bowl pick as a kicker and a punter, was the all-state team's punter.
