Frustration had to be mounting for the Northwestern Lady Trojans on Friday during a Region 3-AAAA soccer match against cross-town rival Rock Hill.
The Lady Trojans were clearly the aggressor with the majority of the action inside the Lady Bearcat scoring box. Northwestern ended up with 17 shots on goal compared to only two for Rock Hill.
Yet, the action produced no goals during the 40-minute regulation on the artificial turf at Carlisle Field inside the Manchester Village soccer facility.
"We had chance after chance," Northwestern coach Ceasar Robles said. "But that is the nature of the game."
In overtime, however, the Lady Trojans finally scored when Kara Pennington controlled a deflected crossing pass and shot the ball into the lower left corner of the goal for the dramatic 1-0 victory.
"It was a cross throw-in and someone deflected it," Pennington said while trying to recall the game's lone goal with 40.9 seconds remaining in the first 5-minute overtime session. "When I got the ball, I faked left and then, moved to the right and shot it to the rear post past their keeper."
Robles said that after numerous missed opportunities in regulation, a breakthrough would occur if his team remained aggressive offensively.
"In the extra period, we felt that it would finally fall for us," he said. "We have had chance after chance with several balls hitting the cross bar. But give credit to their keeper. She played an excellent game to keep them in the match."
Rock Hill freshman Sam Petit had 13 saves.
Lady Bearcat coach Merideth Johnson said that Petit anchored an outstanding defense in the face of Northwestern's attack.
"Our keeper was amazing. She was awesome tonight, and she is only a freshman," Johnson said. "And overall, we came up with great defense."
Johnson said that despite the late Northwestern goal, Petit deserves the game ball.
"When she came off the field, I told her that she was our hero. She did a great job despite being under so much pressure."
Petit said she went with her instincts."I had not been in a game under pressure like this against our rivals."
The victory gives the Lady Trojans a 1-2 record in Region 3-AAAA and 3-4-2 overall. Rock Hill falls to 1-1 and 1-2, respectively.
