Will Reid pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, as the Rock Hill baseball team defeated Clover 7-3 on Friday.
Reid gave up five hits to move to 4-0 on the season. Zach Carter came on to get the final two outs and finish off the Blue Eagles.
Rock Hill was coming off an extra-inning loss Thursday to Fort Mill. The Bearcats led that game 5-1 before Fort Mill rallied, handing Rock Hill its first Region 3-AAAA loss.
“Last night we just didn’t finish and we’ve got to do a better job finishing out ball games,” Rock Hill coach Dell Corley said. “But I’m happy with the win. We’ve got some great attitudes and we are learning how to handle adversity. I think they proved that tonight.”
The Bearcats struck early Friday. Carter doubled to the gap between right and center fields with one out in the first and scored on Chase Watts’ single to left.
Clover starter Barrett Courtwright, who threw a perfect game against South Pointe last week, left the game with an injury and was replaced by Patrick Love.
Rock Hill scored two more in the first inning, with Cody Edkins ripping an RBI double down the third base line. Edkins finished 3-for-3.
Clover scored an unearned run in the second when Zane Van Hook reached on an infield hit and scored on Nate Morrison’s hit.
The Bearcats kept the pressure on in the home half of the inning. Wes Bostic reached on catcher’s interference, Caleb Hamilton walked, and Carter scored them with a triple to right-center. He scored on a balk to make it 6-1.
Trailing by six runs, Clover scored two runs in the sixth on an error, two hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. Love singled home one run and Chase Galant’s sacrifice fly scored Van Hook who had singled. Van Hook was 2-for-4. Kevin Wade pitched the sixth inning for Clover and retired the side in order, striking out two.
