Another masterful pitching performance by the Rock Hill Bearcats in the 2014 Wheels Invitational baseball tournament carried them to a 3-0 win over the Oxnard (Calif.) Yellow Jackets.
Bearcats’ junior Zach Carter pitched a complete game, three-hitter leading the way for Rock Hill. He struck out nine without allowing a walk. It was Carter’s second start of the year for Rock Hill.
“He easily could be in the starting rotation,” said Bearcats’ head coach Dell Corley. “Who knows? He might be what we need. We took steps in the right direction in doing little things right tonight.”
Rock Hill got its leadoff hitter on base six of the seven innings, but struggled to score leaving eight runners on base.
In his third at-bat, Caleb Hamilton got on base and Rock Hill finally got a run on the board with a squeeze bunt by senior Chase Watts scoring Hamilton in the fifth inning. Watts would then score on a throwing error by the Oxnard shortstop.
Hamilton walked for the third time in the game to open the seventh inning before a throwing error by Oxnard starter Joseph Romero, committed to the University of Nevada, on a pick-off attempt allowed Hamilton to scurry to third base.
Watts would then drive in Hamilton with a single to give the Bearcats some insurance before going onto the bottom of the inning.

On the mound for Fort Mill, Nick Matchunis pitched 5.1 innings allowing two runs on one hit, while walking two and striking out three Oxnard hitters.
Matchunis got pulled in the sixth inning after walking the first two hitters and then hitting a batter. Reliever Garrett Leonard came in and got Fort Mill out of the jam, but not before a Fort Mill error and a single scored Oxnard’s only two runs of the game.
