Winthrop is hosting the Battle for South Carolina college volleyball tournament Friday through Sunday at Winthrop Coliseum.
Rock Hill’s Karis Watson will be there, battling for the Clemson Tigers, who have started the season 4-0. South Carolina and Furman, and the host Eagles round out the field.
Watson starred at Rock Hill in volleyball, but also track and field where she was All-State in high jump, triple jump and shot put for the Bearcats. As a senior, Watson helped lead Cindy Elder’s 2010 Bearcats volleyball team to the state finals, before falling to Aiken.
Watson definitely likes playing against Winthrop. She recorded 16 kills in Clemson’s 3-1 victory over the Eagles last September, a career high. The 6-foot-2 senior started all 22 games in which she played last season for the Tigers, and should be in the first six when Clemson squares off with eternal rival South Carolina in the tournament opener Friday at 4 p.m.
Winthrop is 2-3 after a week of regular season play, with wins over Rutgers and Charlotte, the latter coming in a thrilling five-set match on Tuesday night. Bruce Atkinson’s team opens its participation in the tournament Friday night at 7 p.m. against Furman. The Eagles then play Clemson at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a 7 p.m. match against South Carolina.
