The South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association released its preseason rankings and players to watch for the upcoming high school basketball season on Wednesday.
South Pointe’s boys were ranked No. 4 in 3A, while Northwestern checked in at No. 7 in 4A. Great Falls was also No. 7, in the 1A classification. John Bramlett’s Northwestern girls were ranked No. 9 in 4A.
Newberry pair make All-South Atlantic football
Locals Alstevis Squirewell (Great Falls) and Stephen Nance (Northwestern) were named to South Atlantic Conference all-conference squads.
Defensive lineman Squirewell was Newberry’s second-leading tackler with 66 total stops and was named to the league’s first team all-conference squad. He finished second in the SAC with 16.5 tackles for loss and tied for sixth in the league with 4.5 sacks. His 42 solo stops ranked seventh in the conference. He had a season high of 11 tackles in the home games against Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman, forcing a fumble against the Bears and notching two sacks against the Eagles.
Offensive tackle Nance was noted as one of the league’s top linemen, providing excellent blocking in both the passing and running phases of Newberry’s multiple offense and earning second team All-SAC honors. Nance started every game for the Wolves this season and earns his first collegiate postseason honor.
