South Pointe and Northwestern players agreed to give their thoughts on football and the big game today at District Three Stadium. The following is what they said:
"It's awesome to be playing on national TV. It's pretty good because we get to play a good team that is also our rival. The TV part is important to some of us who ,want a scholarship. If we show out on TV, maybe some college coaches will notice us."
Albert Neely, defensive tackle
"We've been excited about this opportunity all week and I believe it has helped us with our game preparation. It's made us focus more, being on TV, a lot harder than usual. I've been telling people this will be a great opportunity for us. This game, this doubleheader, is good for our school, our town and all of York County."
Alex McCleod, offensive lineman
"It's going to be awesome for us to be on the field with Northwestern, Hoover and Byrnes. People know about all four of us. We have good talent on this team and have an opportunity to play a good Northwestern team. If we win, it will look good for us."
Vic Douglas, offensive lineman
"We are in 3A this year so this is our chance to show that we can play with anybody. I've been talking about this game since it was announced. I've been contacted by relatives around the state who are coming. And those who can't called and said they'd be watching us on TV."
Jarvis Sowell, outside linebacker
"I'm taking it like I would every game we play. It week to week for me, and winning is the goal. I'm trying not to think about being on TV. My thoughts have been on preparing for South Pointe because this is going to be a big game for both of us.''
Rod Byers, defensive line
"It's great to open our season against our rival and for the game to be shown on national TV. Our coaches told us that a lot of people will be watching and that District Three Stadium will be packed. It will be a great day to play football. We will not get nervous and we'll play our game.''
Gerald Dixon, defensive line
"We only play South Pointe once a year, so I can't imagine what it's going to be like opening our season against them on TV. This really is an awesome opportunity. No, it's a great one.''
Collins Mauldin, offensive line
"I've been excited all week; every day since I found out about this game. We play South Pointe and one of our top goals is to win each time we play because of the rivalry we've built. People know about the rivalry, what has happened the last two seasons, and I think that will bring them out to the game.''
Steven Nance, offensive line
