The Clover Blue Eagles came home Friday after two weeks on the road facing North Carolina opponents and didn't disappoint the home crowd at Memorial Stadium.
Clover beat Fort Mill, who was also on the road for the second straight week, 40-7, as Clover compiled 398 yards on the ground. The Blue Eagles are now 4-0 on the season.
"We came out flat in the first half," said Clover coach Jet Turner. "In the second half, our backs made some hard runs. We tried to take what they were giving us."
Fort Mill presented a somewhat balance attack on offense, while the Blue Eagles pounded the ball on the ground throughout the game throwing only three passes.
Never miss a local story.
Led by seniors Derrick Carothers and Aaron Miller on offense, the Clover defense held Fort Mill to just 175 yards of offense. Miler ran for 201 yards on 18 carries and Carothers ran for 100 yards on 17 carries.
"We knew we had to tackle number 12 (Miller)," said Fort Mill coach Ed Susi. "He is a good player. They are tough to stop. We didn't get into any rhythm on offense."
Clover stopped Fort Mill on its opening series of the game as the Jackets gathered negative five yards on the drive. Clover blocked Fort Mill's punt attempt giving the Blue Eagles the ball at the Jackets' 26-yard line.
On the Blue Eagles second play from scrimmage, Carothers scored on a 27-yard touchdown run after taking over deep in Fort Mill territory.
Fort Mill played better on their second drive as they depended on junior quarterback Preston Fry's passing abilities to move the ball. Fry and senior receiver Trent Butler connected on four passes on the drive, before Fry connected with senior Asa Kryst for a 21-yard touchdown. Kryst made a spectacular catch over the shoulder of Blue Eagles senior defender B.J. Hinton.
The scoring drive for Fort Mill consisted of 16 plays and ate up the majority of the clock in the opening quarter.
The Jackets converted two fourth down plays to keep the ball moving on the drive.
Fort Mill stopped Clover on a 13-play drive that carried the game into the second quarter. The Blue Eagles turned around and did the same for Fort Mill, forcing them to punt.
Clover moved the ball well in the second quarter as they got to within the 8-yard line and looked to score before coughing the ball up to the Yellow Jackets.
The Blue Eagles had two stops in the red zone in the second quarter, but couldn't put the ball in the end zone.
Scoring outside of the red zone wasn't a problem for Clover. Miller scored on the second play of their second series in the second quarter running in from 43-yards out.
On their next possession, Fort Mill tried to rush things and score before the half, but things went wrong for them as Fry threw it deep where it was picked off by junior Trey Childress.
Both Clover and Fort Mill came out of the locker room in the second half looking like different teams as the Blue Eagles exploded for 26 points.
