The Westminster Catawba Indians came back from a week off and did not skip a beat as they defeated the Christ School Greenies, 47-22, at Tomahawk Stadium. The win moved the Indians to 3-0 on the season.
Senior running back Josh Parker was the workhorse as he racked up 101 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone and staked the Indians to a 24-6 halftime lead. Parker finished the night with 123 yards on 17 carries.
Indians' coach Dan Devine was not surprised by Parker's performance.
"Josh always runs hard," Devine said. "That's our game plan every week is to come in and run the ball."
Fellow senior Cameron Adkins was a do-everything player for the Indians. Adkins converted three two-point conversions out of a unique formation the Indians have been working on. He ran for another score and had a 65-yard kickoff return to set up another.
"Cameron's an all-purpose guy," Devine said. "That's why we put him back there. He's quick enough to do everything, he's smart enough to do everything, and he's willing to do it. So we just put the burden on his shoulders."
The Greenies were caught off guard by the Indians' two-point play calling.
"We've always had it," Devine said of the two-point play. "We were just trying something different. It worked pretty good. We've just got to perfect it a little bit more. It's always something in the game plan you can go to."
The Indians actually scored five two-point plays in the game, which could be a record. They recorded two safeties on high snaps over the Greenies' punter's head where he just kicked the ball out of the back of the end zone to avoid giving the Indians possession deep in good field position. The first safety came at the end of the first possession of the game to stake the Indians to a quick 2-0 lead.
