'Don't blink' could have been the Homecoming theme Friday night at Tomahawk Stadium as the Westminster Catawba Indians made quick work of the visiting Village Christian Knights 42-0. Four of the Indians' six touchdowns came on the first play after they gained possession of the ball.
Senior running back Josh Parker continued his stellar season and set the tone for the evening as he got things started off with a 65-yard touchdown scamper on the first play from scrimmage. After crossing midfield Parker cut back instead of going out of bounds on the home sideline and steamrolled a would-be tackler on his way to the end zone.
Parker topped that performance with a 67-yard run later in the quarter on another one-play possession. He finished the night with 222 yards on 14 carries.
Parker's partner in the quick-strike party was fellow senior Cameron Adkins. Sandwiched between Parker's two first quarter scores was Adkins' 35-yard punt return for a touchdown at the 4:37 mark of the quarter.
Never miss a local story.
Adkins also had a 77-yard run on the first play of a second quarter possession for the Indians. He would have had yet another if not for an illegal block call that wiped out a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter. However, sophomore Nate Casey finished off that same drive with a 3-yard run two plays into the second stanza.
Devine called off the dogs after the halftime festivities and the second half was played with a running clock. This continued the theme as the game ended after only two hours even with the extra long intermission. What also set the pace for the evening was the fact that the Indians only threw one pass in the game and they did not need to as they amassed 358 yards on the ground in the first half.
"You always try to tune yourself up and get better technically for everybody," Devine said of the lop-sided score. "It gives us a chance to get the younger kids in and get them some work."
The Indians turned back the Knights' deepest scoring threat by stopping them on a fourth-and-one from the 17 to turn the ball over on downs early in the final frame.
