The Columbia Capitals' offense dominated the time of possession and ended Indian Land's season with a 28-21 victory Friday night.
The Warriors' defense struggled with Columbia's balanced offensive attack, as the Capitals' Ty Tyler connected with Casey Gladney for all seven of his completions - including a 56-yard touchdown with seconds left before halftime. Columbia's Deerik Bradley also rushed for 183 yards on 34 carries.
The Warriors' Rondreas Truesdale, despite only carrying six times in the first half, displayed the type of game-breaking ability that Indian Land has relied upon all season.
After a Capitals' end-zone fumble was recovered for a touchback, Truesdale took over. His quarterback keeper went 80 yards for a touchdown. The run was highlighted by a spin move that left several Capitals defensive players reeling.
The Warriors other playmakers, Breyon Williams and Jarrell Robinson, could never get going due to the Capitals' clock-killing offense.
With the full load on his shoulders, Truesdale still managed a 15-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to bring Indian Land to within seven points. A 40-yard Reggie Wyatt punt return put the Warriors on the Capitals' 20-yard line in the waning minutes of the game to set the stage for a comeback. But the Warriors turned the ball over on downs after several unsuccessful attempts to put the ball in the end zone.
Indian Land coach Mike Mayer could not be reached for comment after the game. The reaction of the players after the crushing loss spoke volumes.
Seniors Robinson and AJ Gordon embraced at the 50-yard line, tears flowing as teammates acknowledged the end of the season. Indian Land finished 9-2.
