Westminster Catawba pummeled visiting Christ School (N.C.) in the opening round of the North Carolina independent school playoffs with a 61-6 win at Tomahawk Stadium.
Westminster Catawba's Josh Parker had five touchdowns and 212 yards rushing on 18 carries in the first half. He added another score late in the third and finished with 255 yards rushing on 25 carries.
It was Parker's first game back after suffering a concussion in the third quarter against First Assembly Christian two weeks ago.
First-year coach Dan Devine couldn't be more proud of Parker, and he's especially happy to have him back on the field as Indians advance to the second round of the NCISAA playoffs.
Never miss a local story.
"He just turns it on to a whole new level and is probably one of the best running backs I've coached in my life," Devine said. "He's just an unbelievable spark plug, and I'm proud of him. He just gives us another gear, another lift. Some of the cuts tonight were ridiculous.
"We've got all the horses back, and we're ready for the push."
The push continues next week for Westminster Catawba (10-1) against the Southlake/Trinity winner.
Parker broke free for his first score, a 49-yard sprint up the middle, on the Indians' second drive.
After the defense forced a quick three-and-out, Mark Vehaun capped a five-play scoring drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Parker.
The Greenies answered with the longest play of the game - an 80-yard touchdown run by Jordan Farquharson - to make it 16-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The Indians exploded for three scores in the second quarter to push their lead to 40-6 at the half. The final score of half electrified the fans who blanketed the hillside when Parker ran into the end zone from 79 yards out with 58 seconds remaining before the break.
