In their emotional season opener the Westminster Catawba Indians throttled division rival SouthLake Christian 46-0, igniting a season where the Indians outscored opponents by a total of 406-98.
The teams met again Friday night for the right to play in the NCISAA Division II championship game, and in a repeat of history, the Indians soundly defeated the Eagles 33-15.
The SouthLake Eagles received a healthy dose of Westminster Catawba senior running back Josh Parker early and often. Parker, who almost single-handedly controlled the time of possession, rumbled for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in the first half alone.
SouthLake quarterback Sam Remick started off hot, but was quickly subdued by a Westminster Catawba defense that has been dominating all season. The Indians' front line, led by conference Defensive Player of the Year Ian Brandt, won the battle at the line of scrimmage for all four quarters. They forced Remick outside of the pocket numerous times.
Never miss a local story.
Westminster Catawba's season concludes next week against First Assembly Christian, who handed the Indians their first and only loss of the season.
Indians' first-year coach Dan Devine reflected on the triumphs and adversities that have defined Westminster Catawba's 2010 campaign.
"We've seen a little bit of everything this year," Devine said. "From successes to tragedies, this team has been through a lot. Hopefully it will culminate with a championship victory next week. We're going to enjoy tonight's victory for one night and one night only."
