South Pointe defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and Northwestern quarterback Justin Worley are mentioned among the top players in the country at their positions.
Most recruiting services have Clowney, 6-foot-6, 255 pounds, as the top player at any position and schools from around the country have South Pointe on their stops in finding the best players for their programs. Although his list is subject to change, Clowney is said to be down to South Carolina and Alabama, but recently said LSU is in the picture.
Worley, 6-5, 200 pounds, is committed to Tennessee and says its firm as he continues his quest to rewrite every known passing record ever in South Carolina.
They've gone head-to-head many times on the football field and both were chosen for this year's south Carolina Shrine Bowl All-Star Football team, putting them on the same sideline.
Never miss a local story.
But there's another competition out there, a friendly one, that either would be proud to win.
Clowney and Worley are among the eight finalists for this year's 2010 South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association's S.C. Mr. Football award.
The others are: Greenwood LB Quinn Backus; Myrtle Beach QB Everett Golson; Summerville RB De-Angelo Henderson; James Island WR Bo Patterson; Dorman WR Charone Peake and Goose Creek OT Brandon Shell.
To be considered for this award a senior player must be nominated by his head coach and supported by a letter of recommendation from a non-athletic faculty member.
Former area winners were Rock Hill High's Chris Hope (1997) and South Pointe's Stephon Gilmore (2008). The award was started in 1995 and the first winner was Berea wide receiver Jermale Kelly.
USC freshman tailback Marcus Lattimore (Byrnes) was named last year's Mr. Football.
This year's winner will be announced on Dec. 10 at the North-South All-Star Football Game Awards night at Myrtle Beach High School's Performing Arts Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. All finalists are expected to attend.
Tickets are $15 each at the door. Up to two children (under 12) admitted free with one adult ticket holder. Go to www.northsouthallstarfootball.com for more information.
