Northwestern quarterback Justin Worley, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound senior, is closing in on another state passing record and will likely get it Friday when the Trojans host West Ashley in the second round of the Class AAAA Division II playoffs.
Worley threw five touchdown passes last week in a 45-14 opening-round win against James Island, giving him 52 this season. The state record, as recognized by the South Carolina High School League, is the 53 by former Byrnes quarterback Willy Korn.
Since Worley became the starter his sophomore season, the Trojans are 35-7 and region champs three straight years.
Worley, who committed to the Tennessee Volunteers, is rewriting the state record book, "Palmetto's Finest." The book, which is the official record book of the SCHSL, does not include all passing categories, and the majority of stats below are those compiled by Northwestern offensive coordinator Kyle Richardson.
The Herald will update Worley's stats each week, with notes where necessary.
Last Friday: In the Trojans' win against James Island, Worley completed 33 of 47 pass attempts for 471 yards and 5 TDs.
