Records: SP- 2-2; NW- 2-2
Last week: South Pointe lost to Vance 28-7; Northwestern beat Greenwood 52-24
Never miss a local story.
Last meeting: Northwestern won 27-0 (2013)
Points allowed/scored per game: SP- 24/20.5; NW- 30/37.5
Rankings: Northwestern is ranked No. 13 in the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16
Players to watch: SP- Jr. ATH Nick McCloud (FBS, FCS interest), Sr. DL Brandon Fisher, Sr. RB Shawn McCullough, Sr. WR Deshawn Davis; NW- Sr. ATH Dupree Hart, Jr. LB Trae’von Hinton, Jr. DT Jamah Mitchell, Soph. RB Jerry Howard, Jr. WR Julian Shockley.
TV/radio: WRHI-FM 94.3/AM1340
Need to know: Northwestern is hard to beat when it doesn’t turn the ball over. The Trojans coughed the ball up seven times in its first two games, including five against Charlotte Catholic, but only gave it away once in the last two games, both wins. The one common thread in the two wins? The opposition have yet to win a game this season. Creating turnovers is South Pointe’s modus operandi, and the Stallions should be a tougher test than two rebuilding programs at Irmo and Greenwood.
Boiling Springs at York
Coaches: BS- Rick Tate, 2nd year; Y- Bobby Carroll, 5th year
Records: BS- 2-1; Y- 4-0
Last week: Boiling Springs lost to Dutch Fork 60-24; York beat Chester 53-21
Last meeting: York won 46-45 (2013)
Points allowed/scored per game: BS- 33.7/45; Y- 17/42.5
Rankings: York is ranked No. 2 in the S.C. Prep Media 4A poll, No. 6 in the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16, and No. 85 in NationalHSfootball.com national rankings; Boiling Springs is ranked No. 10 in the S.C. Prep Media 4A poll.
Players to watch: BS- Sr. LT Noah Green (Clemson commit), Sr. TE Collin Reed (Appalachian State commit), Sr. WR Jason Hill (FCS interest), Sr. LB Cameron Baxley (FCS, Division II interest); Y- Sr. DB Daurice Simpson (offers from James Madison, Illinois State, N.C. Central, Youngstown State), Sr. DL Luc Greene, Jr. RB Brandon Garvin, Sr. WR Kyron Schrouder.
TV/radio: Listen live on WRHI.com; 9:45 p.m. playback on WRHI-FM 94.3/AM1340
Need to know: York coughed the ball up four times in its season-opener against Sumter, but the giveaways have shrunk away since with just two in the ensuing three games. The Cougars have forced 10 in four games and will be hunting more Friday against Boiling Springs, which turned the ball over seven times in its lopsided loss to Dutch Fork last week. Expect York to bring pressure against Bulldog fill-in QB Drew Johnson.
Fort Mill at West Florence
Coaches: FM- Ed Susi, 8th year; WF- Trey Woodberry, 9th year
Records: FM- 3-1; WF- 2-1
Last week: Fort Mill lost to River Bluff 14-7; West Florence beat Lugoff-Elgin 12-6
Last meeting: never played
Points allowed/scored per game: FM- 17.25/41.75; WF- 22.7/25.7
Players to watch: FM- Sr. LB Dan Marr, Sr. ATH Chandler Kryst, Jr. QB Rogan Wells, Sr. LB/RB Malik Long; WF- Sr. DE Dorian Gerald, Sr. RB Dexter Fulmore, Sr. DB Jaylen Pinckney, Sr. WR Romel Hatcher.
Need to know: West Florence’s talented senior quarterback, Marquane Goodman, injured his shoulder in the Knights’ Week One win over Camden. Goodman has offers from a slew of FCS schools, but it’s been junior Bowman Hiller piloting the West Florence offense since Week One. Look for West Florence to rely on Fulmore and junior Eron Darby in the ground game with Hiller more of a pocket quarterback.
Rock Hill at Sumter
Coaches: RH- Bubba Pittman, 1st year; S- John Jones, 1st year
Records: RH- 2-2; S- 3-1
Last week: Rock Hill lost to Dorman 35-14; Sumter beat Lakewood 35-12
Last meeting: Sumter won 35-14 (2008)
Points allowed/scored per game: RH- 19.75/28.5; S- 24/34.25
Players to watch: RH- Sr. RB Brandon Croutch, Sr. WR Deshaun McFadden, Jr. LB Donavon Perryman, Sr. DE Stephen Chesney; S- Sr. WR Kyjon Tyler (offer from Appalachian State), Sr. OL Blake Durant (offers from Appalachian State, Charlotte and Old Dominion), Sr. QB James Barnes.
TV/radio: FM 104.1
Need to know: Rock Hill last beat a team with a winning record in mid-2011 when the Bearcats topped Ridge View. Sumter, a team that could have beaten York in the season opener but for a rash of second half turnovers, makes for a unwelcoming host on the road as Rock Hill seeks out the marquee win that it craves.
Ridge View at Nation Ford
Coaches: RV- Raymond Jennings, 11th year; NF- Michael Allen, 5th year
Records: RV- 1-2; NF- 2-2
Last week: Ridge View beat Irmo 38-22; Nation Ford beat Greenville 63-55
Last meeting: Nation Ford won 31-28 (2013)
Points allowed/scored per game: RV- 25/16.7; NF- 44.75/34.75
Players to watch: RV- Sr. LB Josh Hill (FCS interest), Sr. WR Marcus Reaster-Glover, Sr. DE Khalil Hopkins, Sr. DE Nasir Player; NF- Sr. DB/WR Ervin Lassiter, Jr. WR Josh Shade, Jr. ATH Jordan Helms, Jr. QB Cole Martin.
TV/radio: Cable 103/1103 or listen live on WRHI.com
Need to know: Ridge View scored a combined 12 points in its first two games, including just one touchdown, but the Blazers will need to score a lot more than that to keep pace with a Nation Ford offense that is clicking right now. If the Falcons can get a few defensive stops, it’s hard to see Ridge View slowing down Cole Martin and his cohorts.
Clover at Blythewood
Coaches: C- Chad Smith, 2nd year; B- Dan Morgan, 2nd year
Records: C- 0-4; B- 1-2
Last week: Clover lost to White Knoll 41-36; Blythewood was idle
Last meeting: never played
Points allowed/scored per game: C- 36/24.75; B- 8.7/22.3
Players to watch: C- Sr. RB Colton Barnes, Sr. OL Charles McClure, Sr. TE/DE Landon Harkey, Jr. ATH Tenchi Her; B- Jr. QB David Isreal, Sr. CB Dominique Lemon (offers from 12 FCS schools), Jr. DB Khris Pam (FBS interest), Sr. LB Hassan Belton (FCS interest).
TV/radio: FM 107.1
Need to know: Blythewood catches Clover at the best possible time, a bye week, enabling the Bengals to better prepare for the Blue Eagles’ ceaseless run game. Clover has been close the last two weeks, losing to Westwood by two and White Knoll by five, but their defense continues to leak points. The Bengals’ thus far anemic offense might be the remedy for Chad Smith’s team.
Lancaster at Camden
Coaches: L- Bobby Collins, 1st year; C- Jimmy Neal, 17th year
Records: L- 3-0; C- 1-2
Last week: Lancaster beat Pageland Central 26-7; Camden was idle
Last meeting: Camden won 40-3 (2005)
Points allowed/scored per game: L- 6.3/29; C- 34.3/23.7
Players to watch: L- Sr. WR Jay Hood (FCS interest), Sr. LB Cameron Meadows, Sr. ATH Dre Bailey, Sr. OL Eaven Austin; C- Sr. S Nelson Semple, Jr. QB Jamar Byrd, Sr. TE Chase Truesdale, Jr. DL Tyrone Kelly.
TV/radio: listen live on WRHI.com; 9:45 p.m. playback on FM 104.1
Need to know: The Bruins have only allowed 19 points through three games, but Camden should provide a stiffer test Friday behind running back Kendrice Slater and Byrd, the quarterback. The Bulldogs’ two losses came against 4A West Florence and 3A powerhouse Hartsville, and they will provide Lancaster’s toughest competition ahead of region play.
Chester at Lower Richland
Coaches: C- Anthony Sterling, 5th year; LR- Darryl Page, 3rd year
Records: C- 1-3; LR- 1-3
Last week: Chester lost to York 53-21; Lower Richland beat Airport 20-13
Last meeting: Chester won 42-7 (2009)
Points allowed/scored per game: C- 32.5/16.25; LR- 25.5/16.5
Players to watch: C- Jr. OL Stanley Yarborough, Sr. WR Earl Hinton, Sr. QB Tommy Sanders, Sr. OL David Days; LR- Jr. WR/QB Larry Collins (FBS interest), Sr. RB DeAndre Smith, Sr. ATH Reo Robinson.
Need to know: Lower Richland’s offense looks more dynamic with junior Larry Collins recently moved into the starting quarterback role. Collins, who has offers from Florida State, Clemson, South Carolina and Tennessee, is the Diamond Hornets’ third quarterback in four weeks. Collins threw for one touchdown and ran for another in the win over Airport; Chester coaches will be putting together a defensive plan with him in mind.
Indian Land at Cheraw
Coaches: IL- Michael Mayer, 14th year; C- Johnny White, 14th year
Records: IL- 2-1; C- 0-3
Last week: Indian Land beat Lewisville 37-6; Cheraw lost to Marlboro County 17-0
Last meeting: Cheraw won 12-6 (2013)
Points allowed/scored per game: IL- 13.3/29.3; C- 26.3/11.7
Players to watch: IL- Jr. FB Austin Gordon, Sr. DE/WR Brandon Sellers, Sr. DB Derian Gueldner, Sr. RB Charles Turner; C- Sr. RB Baylen English, Jr. FB Darian Roseau, Fr. LB Tallon Campbell.
Need to know: Cheraw has only committed half the penalties of its first three opponents - Chesterfield, Darlington and Marlboro County - but has fumbled the ball away nine times and is negative-five in turnover margin. If the Warriors can force some turnovers they can put the Braves, a running team, on the back foot.
Carolina Pride at Lewisville
Coaches: CP- Paul Jackson, 1st year; L- Will Mitchell, 2nd year
Records: CP- 3-0; L- 0-4
Last week: Carolina Pride-Marvin Ridge rained out; Lewisville lost to Indian Land 37-6
Last meeting: Lewisville won 47-16 (2008)
Points allowed/scored per game: CP- 10.7/40.3; L- 39/15.5
Players to watch: CP- Sr. QB Bruce Dixon, Soph. WR Matthew Broussard, Sr. LB John DiGiovana; L- Sr. WR Cody Montgomery, Soph. LB Daryl Manning, Sr. RB Christian Laws, Soph. DL Jene Thompson
Need to know: Lewisville’s next three opponents are a combined 9-1, starting with Carolina Pride Friday. Formerly a home-school team out of Charlotte, Will Mitchell says this program has changed its makeup recently and now takes student-athletes unable to play in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for various reasons. This has made Carolina Pride better, another tough outing in a season full of them so far for young Lewisville.
