Chester, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Carve, ridden by Jesus Castanon, outdueled a pair of rivals to capture Saturday's $200,000 West Virginia Governor's Stakes at Mountaineer Park on the West Virginia Derby card.
Trained by Brad Cox for Michael Langford, Carve went off as the 7-5 second pick in the six-horse field. Mylute was the 6-5 favorite with 8-5 morning line favorite Moonshine Mullin being scratched.
Carve pressed pacesetter Adirondack King in the 1 1/16-mile stakes. The 4- year-old gelding got the lead coming into the stretch, but had to fight off both Adirondack King and Voodoo Storm down the stretch.
Carve was able to post neck victory over Adirondack King. Mylute finished third followed by Voodoo Storm, Eriugena and Chairman Garey. Outbacker and Falling Sky were also scratched.
The time for the West Virginia Governor's Stakes on a fast track was 1:44.44.
Carve registered his third straight win and pocketed $124,600. The gelding has won six of 15 career starts for $686,931.
The 4-year-old was coming off a win in the Cornhusker Handicap at Prairie Meadows on June 28 after claiming an allowance race at Churchill Downs two weeks earlier. Earlier this year, Carve was third in the Oaklawn Handicap behind Will Take Charge and seventh to Revolutionary in the Pimlico Special.
Carve paid $4.80, $2.80 and $2.20. Adirondack King returned $10.00 and $4.20, and Mylute paid $2.20 to show.
