Northwestern’s Kelia Shelton followed through with her commitment and signed an athletic scholarship on Tuesday to play basketball at Clemson University.
Shelton, a 5-foot-7 shooting guard, has been a starter for the Lady Trojans since her freshman season and has led the team in scoring each year. Shelton, the daughter of Jonathan and Ruby Shelton, has scored well over 1,000 points and should reach 2,000 this season. She also has more than 500 rebounds.
“I never thought much about Clemson but went up for a visit,’’ Shelton said. “When I get there and looked around, I saw it was the place for me the next four years. I met good people and good coaches.’’
“Clemson’s coach (Cristy McKinney) told me I’d play shooting guard and some point guard. She said I was a strong player, that I would be good for the team and will be able to help my first year.’’
Shelton committed in August. The other teams in her final four were North Carolina State, Miami and West Virginia.
