Lewisville High's Hudson twins sign to play at Limestone

- bbyers@heraldonline.com

RICHBURG -- There are times when something works out just right, and one came Wednesday at Lewisville, when twins Trevor and Kimber Hudson signed letters of intent to attend Limestone in Gaffney.

Trevor signed for baseball, Kimber for softball. They said it wasn't a package deal, it just worked out that way. After all, Trevor said, his second choice was North Greenville College.

“We've always been close and have never really been apart much,'' Kimber said. “It would be weird for us to go to different schools. So when Limestone offered me a softball scholarship and offered Trevor one to play baseball, I was hoping it would work out for us.''

They already are planning, even though each has one more season at Lewisville. Trevor said he'll look after his sister and be her bodyguard. Kimber said she'll cook for her brother. What more could they ask for?

How about playing time? Kimber pitched at Lewisville but also played catcher. She was promised the chance to come in and win the starting catcher job and expects to do so.

Trevor is a middle infielder and was recruited as a second baseman. Limestone has a junior varsity program, and he expects to play at that level while getting ready the “big'' team.

“The coaches want me at second base, but I'll play anywhere,'' Trevor said. “I can play shortstop and sometimes do here, but it doesn't matter to me. I want to work hard and win a starting spot my sophomore year.''

Parents Nolan and Cheryl Hudson said having Kimber and Trevor at the same college will solve a big problem.

“No more Nolan going one way and me the other for games,'' Cheryl said. “When we go visit them at Limestone, they will be in the same place.''

Trevor has had an outstanding career at Lewisville. Coach Billy Keels said he is one of only four freshmen to start for him in 13 seasons. Trevor was named to the All-Region 3-A team his first year.

The twins' uncle, John Hudson, is in the Limestone Baseball Hall of Fame.

Kimber started out playing baseball and stuck with it through the eighth grade. In 2005, she was the only girl that played in the U-AAA Baseball World Series. She did so alongside Trevor and was one of the team's top hitters.

“I like baseball because I got to compete against Trevor,'' she said. “I worked hard because I didn't want him to outdo me. It made me a better player when I started softball.''

“She was just like another player,'' Trevor said. “That's the way all of us treated her. She wasn't as feminine back then.''

Kimber went out for softball in the seventh grade and became a starter. Late that season, the Lady Lions' catcher was injured, and she moved behind the plate from first base.
