In what has been a banner year for Chester High School students getting college scholarships, nine more signed on Monday, matching the number of players who received scholarships from the Cyclones' football team, which was Class AAA state runner-up.The boys basketball team made it to the Class AAA Upper State championship game and is sending three players on to college. Jemarcus McClinton, the Herald's All-Area Boys Player of the Year, signed with Winston-Salem State.
Xavier Mayfield and Donald Sims are headed to USC Salkehatchie.
The softball team, which won the Region 3-AAA title, is sending Taylor Roof to North Greenville College, Amber Hamacher to with USC Sumter and Chiquita Griffin to Claflin College in Orangeburg.
Annie Wilson will attend Erskine College and play soccer. Dannon James signed a swimming scholarship with Gaffney's Limestone College.
Richard Gore, a member of Chester's Class A state runner-up track team, singed to run hurdles at Limestone.
• BIG FOOTS: Fort Mill kicker Chris Larsen recently attended the ProKicker football academy, run by former Oakland Raiders punter Ray Guy, at Wingate (N.C.) University and earned the ranking as the No. 1 high school kicker in the nation and in South Carolina by prokicker.com.
Larsen, who kicked six field goals last season and made 17 extra points, recorded a kickoff distance average of 60 yards, kickoff hang time average of 3.8 seconds and was 90 percent on field goal accuracy.
Rock Hill's Brandon Berger also attended and is ranked No. 6 nationally. Berger had a kickoff distance average of 56.75 yards, kickoff hang time average of 3.78 seconds and was 90 percent on field goal accuracy.
• ALL-REGION GIRLS: The All-Region 3-AAAA girls soccer team has been released and Ashleigh Sheets, who led Fort Mill to the region title, was named player of the year.
The Lady Yellow Jackets ended the season ranked No. 6 in Class AAAA.
Joining Sheets on the team from Fort Mill were Kristen Whitman, Abbie McDonald, Taylor Parker and Lexi Wilden. Sheets and Wilden were selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game.
Clover's Britta Widenhouse was also chosen for the game.
• DIAMOND PROSPECT: Northwestern's T.J. Estes was named to the S.C. Diamond Prospects All-Academic Team's second-team list for 2008.
Diamond Prospects provides online coverage of prep baseball in South Carolina. The service also ranks players state-wide by position and class twice a year. Estes has been listed in the top 15 of the 2009 class as a right-handed pitcher for the last two years.
• TROJANS SOCCER: The accolades for Northwestern's boys soccer team keep rolling in. The Trojans recently moved up to no. 3 in the Student Sports Magazine's National Poll after beating Spring Valley 2-0 in the Class AAAA state championship game.
Northwestern, which was 23-2, finished No. 1 in South Carolina and No. 5 in the NSCAA/adidas National Rankings.
The final goals have been added up and yes, Northwestern's Enzo Martinez did lead the state with 50 goals. But he ended up in a tie with another junior sensation, Stratford's Austin Savage.
Martinez holds the state record for most career goals, with 143; Savage has 113.
• CLOVER AWARDS: Clover recently recognized its spring sports participants and handed out individual awards.

• NATION FORD AWARDS: Nation Ford in Fort Mill opened in August and fielded a full slate of varsity sports. The school recently honored its student-athletes who participated in the winter and spring seasons and handed out individual awards.
The Lady Falcons' softball team, which went 11-5-1 and made the playoffs, shared the Falcon Award.
• INDIAN LAND AWARDS: Indian Land had an outstanding spring sports season and recently honored its student-athletes who participated.
The softball and soccer teams won region titles, the baseball team made the playoffs, several track athletes qualified for the state meet and Chase Hunter was the medalist at the Class A state golf tournament.
Athletes from the winter sports season were also honored.
• LEWISVILLE SOFTBALL: Lewisville High School had a banquet to recognize its student-athletes who participated in varsity softball. During the ceremony, individual awards were handed out.
Dobbins will receive a trophy in recognition of being named the first-ever South Carolina "No Spit" All-Star of the Year.
Four Herald-area players -- Great Falls' Gaither Bumgardner and Isaiah Lynn, Fort Mill's Charlie McCready and South Pointe's Brad Zebedis -- were among the 10 finalists.
