Northwestern, the No. 2 seed from Region 3-AAAA, hosts Hillcrest, not Mauldin, at 7 p.m. today. Hillcrest was third in Region 2-AAAA.

In the other games involving Region 3-AAAA teams, No. 1 York hosts No. 4 Gaffney, No. 3 Lancaster goes to No. 2 Dorman and No. 4 Clover is on the road against No. 1 Boiling Springs.

The brackets are four-team double-elimination. Round 2 is Saturday, with the two winners playing each other and the two losers matched up. The higher-seeded team is the host with one exception. If a lower-seeded team is undefeated going into the finals, it will host. If a second game is necessary, it will follow after a short break at the same site and the home team will be determined by a coin toss.

In Class A on Thursday with the same format:

Great Falls, the No. 2 seed from Region 3-A, hosts North. Lewisville, the No. 3 seed, is on the road at Wagener-Salley. Indian Land beat McBee on Tuesday, grabbed the region's fourth and final seed and will travel to Fox Creek on Thursday.

• SOFTBALL: Indian Land beat McBee on Tuesday and will host Calhoun County on Thursday as a No. 1 seed. Also in the Class A playoffs, Lewisville goes to Fox Creek.

In Class AAAA, York won Region 3-AAAA's final berth with an 11-1 win over Rock Hill on Monday. The Lady Cougars travel to Mauldin, Region 2-AAAA's top seed.

Clover, No. 1, is home against No. 4 Hillcrest. Nation Ford, No. 2, hosts No. 3 Boiling Springs. Lancaster, third in the region, travels to No. 2 Gaffney.

Chester made the Class AAA playoffs, but the pairings have yet to be determined.

• SCHOLARSHIPS: The organizers of the Wheels Baseball Invitational Tournament have announced this year's scholarships, which go to a player from each of Rock Hill's three high schools.

The $500 scholarships can be used for books or other college-related expenses.

Northwestern's winner was Will King, who will attend Furman on a football scholarship. Rock Hill's winner was Stewart Curry. Casey Guyton got the scholarship awarded to South Pointe.

This was the second year for the tournament that is in honor of Larry "Wheels'' Hinson, who died in 2004. It was organized by a group of friends who want to keep his memory alive and reward area players. He was an avid supporter of local youth baseball. Hinson's son, Ryan, is a junior pitcher at Clemson.

• GAITHER: Great Falls junior Gaither Bumgardner, a 6-foot-6 pitcher/first baseman, was named Region 3-A Player of the Year for the second straight season.

He is batting .517, with nine doubles, three triples, three home runs and 10 stolen bases. He has struck out only three times.

• BASKETBALL: Thursday at Fort Mill High School, a group of Fort Mill seniors will take on an ACC select all-star team made up of seniors from the ACC.

Headlining the group are Duke's Demarcus Nelson, North Carolina's Quentin Thomas and Clemson's Sam Perry, Cliff Hammonds and James Mays.

Former Northwestern standout Sean Barnette is on the team as well after his outstanding career at Wingate.

Tickets are on sale at FMHS and Thunder Athletics in Fort Mill for $10 in advance and $15 at the door. VIP tickets are available for $25 and include supper with the players after the game, as well as seating behind the ACC bench.

Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.

There will be a 3-point competition at 6:30 p.m. (open to anyone for $3). Three finalists from preliminaries will shoot against ACC players at halftime.

There will be a dunk competition at halftime.
