Fighting in Afghan north kills 130 insurgents

- The Associated Press

KABUL -- NATO says Afghan and foreign troops have killed more than 130 insurgents, including eight Taliban commanders, in six days of fierce fighting during a major offensive in northern Afghanistan.

NATO said Monday that 700 members of the Afghan security forces and 50 international troops were involved in a clearing operation in the province of Kunduz. They did not identify the nationality of the international forces involved.

Kunduz, a province which borders Tajikistan, is the main area of operation for German forces. But Lt. Col. Joerg Lange, a spokesman for German forces, said none had been involved in the fighting.

The fighting took place from last week in the Charhar Dara district in Kunduz.

Associated Press writers Rahim Faiez, Elena Becatoros and Deb Riechmann contributed to this report.
