Emergency management officials and law enforcement officers in Gaston and Mecklenburg counties participated in a nuclear exercise for the Catawba Nuclear Station in York County, S.C., on Tuesday.
The federally required exercise is held every two years to test emergency procedures at the plant and in county and state government agencies.
The exercise will take place at the emergency operations centers in Mecklenburg and Gaston counties and the State Emergency Operations Center in Raleigh.
The state of North Carolina and Gaston, Mecklenburg and Union counties participate in the drill because a small portion of the 10-mile emergency planning zone for Catawba Nuclear Station is in those counties.
