All York County libraries will be closed Friday, July 4-Sunday, July 6 for Independence Day. In addition, the York County Library in Rock Hill will close at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 3.

Blood drives announced

The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will hold the following blood drives:

• July 5, noon-4 p.m., Walmart, 970 E. Liberty St., York. Heidi Rhein student drive.

• July 7, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Tega Cay Wash and Lube, 2888 S.C. 160, Fort Mill.

• July 12, 4-8 p.m., Regal Manchester Stadium, 1935 Cinema Drive, Rock Hill. Free movie ticket for donors.

• July 12, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Publix, 2186 N. Cherry Road, Rock Hill. Brandon Carroll student drive with free car wash.

• The CBCC said there is a seasonal blood shortage. While all blood types are needed, O type donations are at a critical low.

Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is recruiting students for its Students Saving Summer Scholarship program through Sept. 30. High school and college students who organize and host a successful blood drive have the chance to earn scholarship money for their secondary education.

Cooking workshops scheduled

The Clemson Extension Service in York County will teach a three-day cooking workshop 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. July 8-10 for ages 5-10 and July 22-24 for ages 11-19 at extension office, 120 N. Congress St.

Children will learn the basic foundation of cooking and be able to personalize their own dishes. They will learn to prepare and cook quick breads, yeast breads and egg dishes.

The cost of the three-day workshops $25. Deadline to register is Wednesday, July 2.

Writer’s workshop July 12 in Rock Hill

The 2014 Rock Hill South Carolina Writer’s Workshop Intensive will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 12 at Grace Lutheran Church, 426 Oakland Ave.

The workshop is for writers of all abilities and interests including bloggers, fiction, poetry, nonfiction, technical, illustrators and marketing.

Speakers are Ed Wilson, Rosemary C. Gray, Barbara K. Lawing, Craig Faris, Ann E. Eisenstein and Ed Green.

Become a master gardener

The 2014 Master Gardener class for York, Chester and Lancaster counties is accepting applications for the class starting Aug. 5.

Classes are held at the York County Clemson Extension, 120 N. Congress St., from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays through Nov. 11.

Animal shelter seeks volunteers

York County Animal Shelter Adoption Center, 713 Justice Blvd., needs volunteers to help bathe and groom, exercise, socialize, train, provide adoption information and follow-up, and publicity and marketing.

Comedian highlights Hospice fundraiser

Chonda Pierce, the “Queen of Clean Comedy” brings her cheerful, unpretentious Southern charm, musical talent and wit to Rock Hill Sept. 4 for a Hospice fundraiser at First Baptist Church.

Pierce headlines Hospice & Community Care’s second annual LOL event, which raises money for under-insured hospice patients in the community. The evening will feature dessert and coffee.

Pierce has received five Emmy nominations, appeared in several films including “Your Love Never Fails” and “12 Wishes of Christmas,” is the author of six best-selling books and was recently honored with the “Comedian of the Year” Visionary Award.
