2 tries needed to douse Statesville lumber yard fire

The fire at Godfrey Lumber Co. started Thursday evening. Firefighters say they fought the blaze for four hours and thought they had extinguished it.

But authorities say the fire reignited around 6 a.m. Friday, and it took several more hours to put it out again. Firefighters brought in heavy equipment to remove the siding of the lumberyard building to make sure all the hot spots were out.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Statesville Fire Department Battalion Chief Andy Weatherman said a thunderstorm was in the area when the fire started, and lightning is being investigated as a possible cause of the blaze. Associated Press
