Ocracoke Island reopens after power is restored

Power has been restored on Ocracoke Island and officials have reopened the remote Outer Banks town to visitors after Hurricane Arthur slammed the island last week.

Tideland EMC said its crews had to repair 45 utility poles damaged by the Category 2 storm. The power was turned back on over the whole island Saturday night.

Road crews also repaired some damage on N.C. 12, which links Ocracoke to its ferry terminal.

Now that the electricity is on, ferry service has resumed and the state of emergency on the island is lifted.
