Sixty-three volunteers working with the Society of St. Andrew gleaned 4,000 pounds of corn from Barbee Farms near Concord on Tuesday. The society is a food rescue and distribution ministry that uses volunteers to scour harvested fields for leftovers. The local chapter has gleaned 280,000 pounds of produce this year in the 17-county Charlotte area. It distributed more than 35,000 pounds in July alone. Barbee Farms is one of its biggest providers.
