Authorities have closed U.S. 74 east of Monroe due to a broken water main, officials said Thursday.
Only the eastbound lanes are affected, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
The broken main was reported about 7:30 a.m., with motorists saying water was bubbling up through the road. The rupture is near the U.S. 74 intersection with Old Highway 74, about 1 mile east of the U.S. 74-U.S. 601 intersection.
A detour route has been set up, using U.S. 601 and Old Highway 74 as a link to U.S. 74. The DOT said the estimated time of repair is 4 p.m. Thursday.
