Volunteer gleaners with the nonprofit Society of St. Andrew gathered Friday in Concord to pull 5,000 pounds of sweet potatoes from the fields at Barbee Farms. The sweet potatoes will go to agencies in Lincoln, York, Cabarrus, Rowan and Mecklenburg counties.
The 25 volunteers ranged in age from 2 to more than 80 years. The society is the nation’s premier food rescue and distribution ministry, with a mission to collect produce from already-harvested fields. In the coming week, volunteers will glean muscadine grapes and green beans.
