At Mallard Creek, the real votes go to Brunswick stew and barbecue

Barbecue and socializing under a clear October sky were both on the menu Thursday at the 85th annual Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church barbecue.

While 20,000 visitors were expected for chopped pork, coleslaw, applesauce and Brunswick stew, two visitors were missing: Senate candidates Kay Hagan and Thom Tillis. Hagan was represented by her daughter, Jeanette, while Tillis volunteers handed out his stickers in the traditional line of about two dozen political candidates. Kathleen Purvis
