Police have arrested a man accused of stealing a truck and later robbing a women at knife point in the Shops at RiverGate South parking lot.
Shane Michael Adams, 31, was arrested Feb. 9 by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Adams is charged with stealing a Dodge Ram pickup on Jan. 29 from the Whitehall Park Drive area.
Officers found the vehicle, along with items connecting him to the armed robbery in Steele Creek, at a Brookshire Boulevard motel on Feb. 9.
“Mr. Adams had outstanding warrants so officers placed him under arrest,” CMPD report states. “Further investigation revealed he was in possession of multiple personal items that did not belong to him, including IDs and credit cards.”
The Steele Creek incident occurred Feb. 5. It was about 6:45 p.m. when the victim stopped in at Ulta Beauty. She parked beside a red truck. She noticed a man in the truck talking on his cellphone. The Steele Creek resident spent about 10 minutes in the store and returned to her vehicle.
When she returned to her car, the man in his truck opened his door, trapping her. She said his truck was parked facing out while her’s faced into the parking space.
The suspect threatened the victim with a knife, demanding her purse. She had bruises on her arms where he grabbed her nearly a week after the incident.
“He said if you don’t give it to me, I will kill you,” she said.
The purse contained phones, cash, gift and credit cards, and mailbox keys. The victim was left with her car keys and the perfume she’d just purchased.
“I was shocked,” she said. “I lost everything.”
She followed the truck through several turns along N.C. 49 and into two neighborhoods. She called police from her son’s business nearby.
Officers said the tag she gave them matched a stolen car, she said.
Other items in his possession connected Adams to one case in Gastonia and two more in Charlotte. Adams is charged with motor vehicle theft, armed robbery and four counts of possession of stolen property. He was transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
According to CMPD crime data, there were 29 crimes committed within a mile of RiverGate from Jan. 1 Feb. 5. They include five assaults – two were aggravated, including one with a knife Jan. 14 – 16 larcenies and four vandalism cases. The larcenies include five vehicle break-ins and seven shoplifting incidents.
On Feb. 10, the Steele Creek Division announced three arrests involving armed robbery and vehicle break-ins.
Asean Theondrez Chisholm, 18, was charged with armed robbery following a Feb. 8 incident on Allegiance Drive. Chisholm allegedly stole a gaming system from a someone he’d agreed to meet for a trade. As the victim tried to keep hold of the bag containing the system, Chisholm got into a car that ran over the victim’s foot to leave the scene, according to the police report. The incident caused minor injuries.
Steele Creek officers also arrested Donald Watkins Jr. and Timothy Hykeem Robinson Jr. for alleged involvement in vehicle break-ins at an apartment complex off Dupont Drive. Watkins and Robinson, both 21, were apprehended after residents called police at 10 p.m. Feb. 9 to report suspicious activity. Suspects were pulling on door handles, according to the report. Officers found electronic and other items related to the break-ins when they located and arrested the suspects.
