White Sox send 3 to Charlotte Knights

The Charlotte Knights have received outfielder Stefan Gartrell, right handed pitcher Jeff Marquez and infielder Dayan Viciedo from the Chicago White Sox. All three players were optioned to Charlotte.

Gartrell returns to Charlotte after finishing the 2009 season with the Knights. Gartrell played in 31 games for Charlotte hitting .265 with 4 home runs and 19 RBI. He began the season with Class AA Birmingham and was named to the Southern League mid and post season All-Star teams after hitting 19 home runs and 70 RBI in 101 games.

Marquez returns to the Knights pitching staff after making 11 starts for Charlotte. Marquez’s season ended early after he was placed on the team’s disabled list with a stress fracture and bone spur in his right elbow. While with the Knights he went 2-8 with a 9.85 ERA.

Viciedo joins the Knights after spending his entire 2009 season in Birmingham. This will be the 21 year old Cuban’s first season at the Triple-A level. Viciedo signed a four year $10 million dollar contract with the White Sox in December, 2008. He defected from his native Cuba earlier that year. Last season, he was named to the Southern League mid and post season All-Star team and participated in the MLB Future’s Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
