2010 was a banner year for the Nation Ford Marching Band, which is led by Director Martin Dickey.
In the first half of the year, the band was surprised by the announcement that it had been selected to participate in the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The announcement came as somewhat of a surprise to Dickey, who submitted the lengthy parade application just to get feedback on areas where the band could improve. A few months later, Macy’s officials were telling him that the band was selected for the prestigious, nationally-televised parade.
The band’s second big success of the year came during the fall marching band season. The Nation Ford High School Marching Band took home top honors at competitions throughout the fall and ended the competition season by winning the South Carolina State Marching Band Championship in its division.
Nation Ford came out ahead of Fort Mill high by just a fraction of a point. Fort Mill didn’t get the overall title, but it did bring home awards in several categories. This was Nation Ford’s second state title. It also won the state championship in 2009.

Dickey spent several years at Fort Mill High School as the assistant band director and then the head director before moving to Nation Ford in 2007 when the school opened. He and his students often credit their success as a band to their eye on continually improving themselves as musicians, instead of focusing solely on trophies and awards.
