LANCASTER -- Mr. Thomas Boyd Bradley, 85, died Tuesday, July 3, 2007. He was born June 2, 1922 in Ridgeway, S.C., the son of the late Earl Bradley and Frances Mattox Bradley. He was married for 60 years to the late Frances Thompson Bradley. He. Bradley served in the United States Army in the North Africa, Sicily, and Sardinia campaign during World War II. After returning home, he worked at Lancaster Motor Company. He served two terms on Lancaster City Council and was active in several service organizations in Lancaster, Camden and Rock Hill, where he received the honor of "Lion of the Year" and was cited for his outstanding service and devotion. He was a Mason, Shriner and a member of the DAV. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where he served in many positions. Boyd and Frances lived in Rock Hill for 31 years, where they were members of St. John's United Methodist Church. He received a commendation by motion of S.C. Rep. Gary Simril from the SC House of Representatives for his faithful service and love to his family, friends, church and community. One of his proudest accomplishments was his involvement in the development of USC-Lancaster where he was credited with being "the man with the dream" in establishing the higher education facility in Lancaster. After retiring from Pilot Life Insurance Company he enjoyed working as a Baliff in the Municipal Court system of York County.
Mr. Bradley is survived by daughters, Janice B. Brown and her husband, Ken of Irmo, S.C., and Janet B. Plyler and her husband, Darrell of Lancaster; his son, Tom "T.Boyd" Bradley of Charlotte; two grandsons, Michael Phillips and his fiancée, Ashley Miller and Tommy Plyler and his wife, Jodi, all of Charleston, S.C.; and one brother, Archie Bradley of Lancaster.
Mr. Bradley was preceded in death by his sister, Thelma Bradley and four brothers, W. L. Bradley, "Jiggs" Bradley, "Dock" Bradley and Ernest Bradley.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Bradley will be 11 am Friday, July 6, 2007 at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dan Batson and the Rev. Julian Lazaar, with burial to follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.
