ROCK HILL -- Mr. Ira Lee Smith Jr., 85, of 5870 Williamson Road, passed away Friday, July 6, 2007, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral service will be 3 p.m., Sunday, July 8, 2007, at Eastview Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rick Martin officiating. Burial will take place at Pisgah ARP Church Cemetery, Gastonia, N.C.

A native of Gastonia, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Ira Lee Smith and the late Maude Barker Smith.

He was a World War II Navy veteran that served in Bermuda as an aviation metalsmith. He worked as a master mechanic at the Victory & Wingate textile mills, then worked for Pueumafil Corp. in the engineering department, and retired as a building and code inspector for York County. He volunteered at Bethesda Fire Department and served on the Building Committee. He was a member of Eastview Baptist Church and the American Legion Post in Gastonia.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Kathleen B. Smith of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, Danny L. and Ann Smith of Lawrenceville, Ga.; his daughters, Nancy S. Workman, Joyce Smith Devinney and husband, James, and Jean S. Weaver and husband, Frank all of Rock Hill; his sisters, Ruby Ledford of Shelby, N.C. and Bill Posey of Gastonia; five grandchildren, Kim W. Gordon, John E. Workman, Mark L. Smith, Brian L. Smith and Kendall M. Weaver; and three great-grandchildren, Briston H.Gordon, Austin R. Gordon and Zan K. Gordon.

The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Hospice and Community Care, P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731; or Eastview Baptist Church Building Fund, 1430 Gordon Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
