WASHINGTON -- Mrs. Verna P. Dickerson, 78, died June 22, 2007, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, June 30, 2007, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Silver Spring, Md. Celebrant was Monsignor Francis Kazista. A traditional New Orleans style homegoing ushered Verna into the arms of Jesus.
Mrs. Dickerson, a Silver Spring resident since 1969, retired as a director of Information and Referral from Montgomery County Social Services. She received numerous awards for her tireless work for social justice. Mrs. Dickerson was a charter member of an investment club, Sisters Investing Seriously (SIS).
A native of New Orleans, Mrs. Dickerson was a daughter of the late Benjamin Gordon Powell and Lucille Remy Powell. She was the widow of Walter M. Dickerson. She lived her life in service to Christ, and from 1969 until the time of her death, she was a member and lector at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Silver Spring. At St. John's she established the Hospitality Greeting Ministry.

During her many visits to Rock Hill she supported activities of St. Mary Catholic Church and will be remembered by many parishioners here.
She is survived by five daughters, Lisa Dickerson, Terri Dickerson and Patrice Dickerson all of Washington, Laurie Dickerson of Silver Spring and Verna Holtzclaw of Teaneck, N.J.; her brother Benny Powell of New York, N.Y.; two sisters and brother-in-law, June Brown of Chicago, Ill. and Elizabeth and Frederick McCrowey Sr. of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren.
